THE DARK MOTHER

He was back home at dawn. Hidden in the dark stairwell of his apartment building, between the floors, he whispered fervently to the little teddy bear.

“Tell me everything.”

“It’s a destroyed house, white and gold, in the middle of the forest. Big, white, many floors, many rooms.”

“And the children are there?”

“The bad man keeps them in the basement of the basement. My little owner, my Julia, too. He puts on a mask. And then he does bad things.”

The demon of the teddy bear cried and hid his face in his hands. Then he continued:

“I kept company to my Julia. I told her the goodnight tales our Mom used to tell us. I did what I could to give her some hope in this dark, dark place. And now I’m taken away from her and she is lonely and afraid.”

“Wait a second…” Maurice said, but Gabriel didn’t let him finish.

“Is my brother there?” Gabriel asked in a breaking voice. He felt tears running to his eyes. “Matt. His name is Matt.”

“There are many children in the locked rooms below the house, where one becomes two,” the Teddy Bear said. “Many voices and many cries.”

“Well, how did you get out of there?” Maurice asked.

The Teddy Bear looked at him. There was a moment of silence.

“Well?” Maurice said, staring at the demon. Eventually, the Teddy Bear just broke out in hysterical sobs.

“I don’t know … I don’t remember…” he said.

“That’s alright, calm down,” Gabriel said. The crying demon slid back into the dirty plush toy and the boy turned to Maurice. “Why are you so tough on him?”

The demon of the playground shrugged. Gabriel picked up the teddy bear in his hands, then checked his phone.

“Mom will be up soon. We have to go home,” he said.
